Round 16 Match Report

13 Aug 2014 by Bob Browne

It was a mixed for the Scorpions at Townsend Oval last weekend when the Scorpions took on South Newcastle and it was the Scorpions who prevailed in First grade coming away with much deserved 26-24 win after the Scorpions led 20-6 at half time. However a flood of penalties to South Newcastle in the first 15 minutes of the second half allowed South to mount attacks on the Scorpions defence and score three converted tries to lead 24-20. A great try to Chris Hyde with 12 minutes remaining put the Scorpions in front and a bit of luck and great defence kept the Scorpions in front and a much needed two points which has assured the Scorpions of a semi final spot, it is now up to the playing group to determine in what spot they finish.
Unfortunately the Reserve Grade led for most of the game and a try to South with only a few minutes remaining put them ahead 12-10 and they were able to hold on despite the Scorpions throwing everything at them. That result has now left the Scorpions Reserve Grade is a situation where they will have to defeat both Western Suburbs and Cessnock in the remaining two games to secure a semi final spot.
The Under 23s played possible their worst football of the season to be comprehensively defeated. A win for the Scorpions would have almost secured the minor premiership, however that was not to be and a better result is expected against Western Suburbs this weekend.
This weekend is Scorpions Old Boys Day against Western Suburbs. Thank you to all the Scorpions Old Boys players, volunteers and committee.
