Weekend Match Report

6 Aug 2014 by Bob Browne

Another good day at the office for the Scorpions two weeks ago with three very good wins for the senior sides against Central. Unfortunately the Under 18s gave away too much start in the first half and went down 24-14 after trailing 24 -0 at the break.
The Under 23s continued on their winning ways recording a very hard fought 12-4 win against the 3rd placed side Central. The 12-4 margin was the half time score which highlighted the defence in the match and the also the greasy conditions which made ball handling difficult. The rain and clouds disappeared for the Reserve Grade match and the Scorpions came to play and came away with a great 16-14 win, keeping their semi final hopes alive with only 4 games remaining before the semi finals. The Scorpions First Grade side recorded a very strong 34-18 win against a Central side that had previously won 6 games in succession. This was a game the Scorpions had to win coming off a very disappointing result against Lakes the previous week which left the side vulnerable to make the semi finals if they did not come away with a win against Central. Congratulations to Ryan Houston who has now scored 128 points for the season and is the leading point scorer in the Newcastle Rugby League competition.
The Scorpions were at home last weekend against Cessnock in the replay of the Round 9 washout game and were successful in the two lower grades and drawing the First grade game 28-28. These results have consolidated positions in the top five, however the First Grade still need to win at least one further game to qualify for the semi finals. Hopefully that will be this weekend against South Newcastle
